For those inquiring about the Vibe Soul Lounge and its origins and the creative minds behind it, here's the story:

In September 2013 Fresno Vibe launches its business which is based on photography and events. Everyone loved the events and the pictures that were taken. Fresno Vibe blew up, and the people in Fresno begin to use Vibe’s services widely.

9596934085?profile=original

In March 2014 Javon and Jazmyne Davis launched the first Vibe Soul Lounge. The following month they brought on Dennis Horn to help and be a support on the business side. The originators of the Vibe Soul Lounge, Javon and Jazmyne became aware that there were already “Vibe” events happening and they had planned to collaborate with Fresno Vibe to work collectively and bring a new and chill crowd out together.

9596933687?profile=original

9596934258?profile=original

Dennis was having meetings with the venue owner, but little did Jovan know that behind his back Dennis created contracts snatching the business away from them. At this time Javon was busy with other engagements out of town, and was unable to make the meetings in which he entrusted Dennis to participate in with integrity.

9596933867?profile=original

There is proof and people who attest to this story and stand firm that Dennis Horn is NOT in fact the creator of the event and name “Vibe Soul Lounge”.

Keon Traylor “I was there when Javon and his wife came up the the name and the show. He brought in Dennis to just help and support on the business side”.

Javon Davis “I started Vibe Soul Lounge. I saw Dennis at church and ask him and a whole bunch of other people if they wanted to help, and Dennis said he’d wanted to help. I still have the flyers before I made that mistake.”

Jasmyne Davis “Even before we started Vibe Soul Lounge I remember seeing the Vibe pictures and events, and I told my husband maybe this will be conflicting with FresnoVibe, and he said no because we can just bring Adrian on as a partner”.

9596934279?profile=original

Months prior Adrian Harris CEO of Fresno Vibe tried on many occasions to have meetings with Dennis Horn to come up with ideas of how they could collaborate and do business together to shut down any conflict or bad feelings. But Dennis refused to work with Fresno Vibe and accused Adrian of theft and using bad business practices. Which was very interesting upon finding out that Dennis is in fact NOT the creator of the name or the event “Vibe Soul Lounge”. So he isn't in any position to give anyone permission to use the name or accuse anyone of stealing it. “Nobody likes a thief” indeed, but you’d actually have to own or create something yourself in order to accuse someone of stealing that thing from you. Everything always comes full circle, trust and believe when you don't do right by your people Karma will find a way to pay you in full.

9596934656?profile=original

As a brand strategist and business owner, it is imperative to register your business and have a fictitious business license. As Fresno Vibe has done with the Vibe Soul Lounge & VIBE with multiple businesses listed under corporation.

9596933894?profile=original

As a community we lose the passion and fire for things, and instead of passing the torch to the next person or organization who wants to continue on with an idea or creative event, we allow each other to stand in stagnation. No one has done anything with the Vibe Soul Lounge in 2 years. Dennis has moved on to another event with a different name, which is puzzling as to why he’s so upset about someone else using the name of an event that he’s not promoting anymore and never was the creator of in the first place.

Nothing is new under the sun, someone is always in the background watching and waiting for their chance to be a part of something great. We have to be careful in choosing the people we do business with. Not everyone who smiles and calls themselves a brother or a friend are true to those titles. Always remember to do everything in integrity, and remember even things done in secret will surface and be exposed. There’s enough for us all to eat, the Black Community is known for having a scarcity mindset and trying to bring the next man down in fear that one person will be free and they won’t. We are not crabs in a bucket! Pull your brother up and work together so that you can succeed together.

The original creators Javon and Jazmyne Davis have given Fresno Vibe their blessing on the grand opening of the “Vibe Soul Lounge” at Kocky’s on February 2, 2019. They are excited to work together with the CEO of Fresno Vibe and have agreed to make special appearances and perform on occasions. From the beginning Fresno Vibe’s goal and intentions have always been to collaborate with the Vibe Soul Lounge. Fresno Vibe prides itself in creating jobs, and helping entrepreneurs in the community gain success. Fresno Vibe would like to extend an invitation to ALL of the people who were involved and participated in the “Vibe Soul Lounge” to come and work together collectively to make our community night life a safe, fun, and friendly environment.

The Vibe the Vote Mixer was nothing short of amazing as community leaders put their differences aside to come together for a greater cause.

Community leaders such as Tara Lynn of Fresno Black Chambers, Stephen Davis of BLOC, Feather  Da’Wyz local comedian, Dr. Kehinde Solwazi, Kool Breeze Solar HatsCouncil Member Oliver Baines, Trustee Eric Payne, Julia Najieb’s President of African American Museum, Lennice Najieb of ONME News, Janice Sumler of Take a Stand, and Kina McFadden of Eye Connect Dots all showed up to support and rally for the African American candidates.

9596933053?profile=original

There was a great sense of unity as community organizer Adrian Harris put on the first African American Candidate mixer. It was clear when Adrian Harris gave a heartfelt public apology to Julia and Lennice Najieb as he invited them on the stage and engaged in a tear jerking embraced group hug to settle their differences.

9596933467?profile=original

Emotions were high as candidates Tate Hill and Daren Miller came to a united front, shaking hands for photo ops and taking time to converse with each other throughout the evening. Toward the end of the event Tate Hill and Julia Nejieb were also spotted having what seemed to be a pleasant conversation full of smiles and laughter.

9596933076?profile=original

A special thank you to Candidates Tate Hill, Terri Edwards, Keshia Thomas, Shawn Brooks, Daren Miller, and Kimberly Tapscott-Munson for all of your hard work and continued efforts to be a positive change for our communities and also for showing up and making African Americans aware of the importance of their votes at November 6th Election Date

9596932887?profile=original

Oliver Baines of District 3 took center stage and spoke on the importance of the black vote in America. He made an extremely strong statement saying, “ If every person in here is not voting and not registered to vote YOU are in violation of what it means to be an African American in this country.” He also went on to mention the importance of the historicity of the mixer and how it should be done during every election to support our black candidates and to make African Americans accountable when it comes to voting.

9596933492?profile=original

The environment of the mixer seemed to really relax the candidates and the community leaders, opening the doors for meaningful interactions and a successful event. It is definitely something to be proud of when African American leaders come together and let go of all personal issues for the greater good of the people.

If we truly want to see a change in our community, it starts at the polls. For generations our ancestors fought for our right to vote but many of us today don’t exercise our rights. - Adrian Vibe Harris

9596931898?profile=original

As Americans, we have a voice in these election and who we choose to represent us, a voice that was paid for with the blood, sweat and tears of Americans who came before us. Our voice belongs to us, because we fought for it and we continue fighting for it.

We need to honor their sacrifice by showing up at every election. We need to honor James Chaney— a civil rights worker who was killed by members of the KKK in 1964 for registering African Americans to vote— by proudly earning that “I Voted” sticker. It’s up to us to keep the voice of our community strong and we do that by showing up and casting our ballots, like so many have done across the country.

9596932090?profile=original

Our foremothers and forefathers sacrificed life and limb for our right to vote.

Simply too much is at stake for us to sit on the sidelines. The issues that affect our lives and our children’s lives are debated every day at City Hall, in state General Assemblies and in Congress. We were given a voice as to who makes these decisions for us; let’s keep using it.

Vibe the Vote is a movement devoted to building the political power to people of color through music, concerts, festivals, and entertainment. Our goal is to increase voter turnout by implementing voter awareness programs and organizing key leaders to actively help people of color get involved.

FresnoVibe has also launched a meet and greet mixer with Select Candidates to introduce themselves to the community at large. Prominent local business owners will have the opportunity to endorse/support candidates in their community. Tate Hill, Keshia Thomas,  Daren Miller, Shawn Brooks, Kimberly Tapscott-Munson

Leaders and the community gather Tuesday evening in the alleyways of our local African American historical cultural museum, to support a community cause of  Reclaiming the museum. Aiming to collaborate with active board members in pursuit to remove current board president Julia D. Najieb.

A protest led and inspired by CEO Adrian Harris of FresnoVibe/ Fresno Wall Street. This action was motivated by a statement that the Najiebs released through their ONME news media source. In their statement comments were made mentioning multiple leaders, in ways to them that were unpleasant and unappreciated.  Harris one of the mentioned, chose to respond, leading to Tuesdays call of action.

Amongst the crowd, our museum founding families, children and grandchildren in disarray of this truth. Words of inspiration from Granddaughter  La Keisha Kittrell who reminds us of the love, sweat & tears her grandparents contributed to the community.

9596931055?profile=original

The museum houses 100's of historic photographs, artifacts, & memorabilia dating back from 1880 in the san Joaquin valley from African Americans in or from the central valley. The historical exhibits represents those African Americans excelling in Law, politics, education, health, agriculture, community advocacy & many others. The family is concerned with the lack of integrity and compassion towards their family legacy. "This site is disconnected from the community, the leadership is irresponsive and irresponsible."  They are afraid of where the museum will end up if she remains in power. They are asking the community, to stand with them!

9596931479?profile=original

Furthermore the community heard from local neighbors and community members such as Vernon King, Camille Waters expressing the importance to uphold and keep our museum sustainable for years to come. Sabrina Kelley reminds us her grandparents & family were Canadian immigrants who came to live a better life and preserve the history  & culture of African Americans. Arriving in 1942 men like Clifford & Jack Kelley were the first African American architect and police officer in city of Fresno..

Harris has collaborated with our founding families and is petitioning Julia to step down. In addition plans are to connect with the current board and members to work together in her immediate removal. In the light of love pastor Linear Atkins led us with a word of prayer. The community was encouraged to be consistent, the family was uplifted in knowing their family legacy and contributions will live for years to come. The work is just beginning.

With so much happening in West Fresno (District 3), from violence and social injustices, self proclaimed community leaders Lennice and Julia Najeib of ONME News, seek to sabotage the black community and its leaders. In a recent article published by ONME news statements were made defaming, bashing and criticizing black leaders. (Specifically Adrian Harris) Creating division and adding fuel to the fire, when they’re suppose to be leaders in our community. We can no longer afford to feed the snakes in the grass as they have avidly sold out our community multiple times.

9596925894?profile=original

9596926668?profile=original

Allegedly, city council candidate, Miguel Arias, whom is currently a member of the State Center Community College District Board of Trustees, paid ONME news with the goal of assassinating the character of his opposing candidate, Tate Hill Jr. This was done in hopes that the black community would lose confidence in Hill’s leadership. Who is Miguel Arias? A city council candidate for Fresno’s District 3, representing West Fresno, whom is making a poor effort to support Black leaders and groups that seek his participation.

9596926083?profile=original

Youth Ambassador and leader on the rise, Kayla Foster was shot and killed during a drive by shooting in West Fresno in the spring of 2017. Arias, was approached to support the “Kayla Foster Foundation” for a special fundraiser. He failed to respond, showing no interest or sympathy. However, he wants to represent us, but isn’t intentional with building “real” relationships with community leaders. He only wishes to deal with sellouts and “little fish”, when there’s a bigger pond at stake.

9596926882?profile=original

This serves as a reminder and a call to action to GET OUT & VOTE on Tuesday, November 6th, 2018. Without your vote, there is a chance that this man that has shown no support or interest in the Black Community, will be our District 3 - West Fresno Council member. This would be an injustice to us all. |VIBE THE VOTE|

Furthermore, according to key witnesses Julia Najieb, our African-American museum President/Chairperson has embezzled funds from the museum, using the funds to support her own lifestyle.  Her time as President has come to an end, we must stand against her at once. It has been reported that she intimidates her board members and they’re afraid to vote her out of her position. She has neglected the museum and its needs for the past 10 years, due to her personal businesses. Using her media business as an outlet to exploit & spread fake news isn’t “Presidential behavior”.

9596927282?profile=original

9596928697?profile=original

The livelihood of Mr. and Mrs. Najieb isn’t the communities concern, however we hold our leaders to a standard, and transparency is the only option. Following a public background search, we discovered bankruptcy, evictions, gambling debt, and rumors of insurance fraud. Their approach to destruct current and upcoming leaders isn’t appropriate and quite frankly is disrespectful. Community leaders are experiencing a challenging time working with these individuals on every level. This has been reported from not only local nonprofits organizations and groups but also statewide organizations and small business owners.

9596929482?profile=original

9596929660?profile=original

The Najieb’s have been unprofessional, rude and non-complying, showing us that representing the community and our local African American museum is not a priority. Mrs. Najieb does not deserve to oversee such a monumental & historical site that is of immense pride to our people. In addition, under Mrs. Najieb’s leadership beautification of the sight has been bare minimum. Instead, maintenance is poor & outdoor appearance is unkept and of poor representation. Mrs. Najieb is reported to be a self-centered President, her motives are unclear but her actions say she isn’t for the community.

9596928896?profile=original

The controversy over Juneteenth Celebration this year had Mr. and Mrs. Najieb names written all over it. These two sought out to put on a 2nd Juneteenth Celebration the same day as the already annually planned Juneteenth Festival led by the Fresno Juneteenth Committee & the Sumler Sisters for the past 8 years. “Juneteenth” is a very important holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865  abolishment of slavery - as known as the African American independence in the United States of America.

Sponsors and corporate businesses are always willing to donate money for this cause. This year Mr. and Mrs. Najieb were willing to do anything for a quick buck even if it meant stepping on the backs of others. Unaware of the division going on in the Black Community, major sponsors that have worked with the official Juneteenth committee for years, were persuaded to work with the Najieb’s Juneteeth committee. Community leaders like Oliver Baines, Daren Miller & Craig Scharton played their part in trying to make sure a collaboration took place between these two parties. Per usual, Mrs. Najieb was unwilling to work with others and decided to put on a conflicting two-day Juneteenth the same-day as the one already planned.

9596929681?profile=original

Mourning the murder of their granddaughter, Kayla Foster, the Sumler sisters was forced to put Juneteenth committee work in overdrive and work twice as hard to host a competing event. Many people feel that the Najieb’s used their lost as an opportunity to step on them while they were down and vulnerable to try and take over the annual Juneteenth festivities. This separation left residents confused and forced to choose which event to attend. Even with the controversy and attempted sabotage, the Fresno Juneteenth Committee held a successful event and was an inspiration to the thousands of community members that attended.

You would think with so much happening in their personal lives, they’d be focused on rebuilding their empire. Instead, they chose to add to the division in the Black community. Like our former First Lady, Michelle Obama said “When they go LOW, we go HIGH.” We won’t allow the Najieb’s to have the last say in what leadership looks like in our community. “We rise by lifting each other” not by putting each other down. Their opinions don't help or shape our community views or visions in any way or form.

People like Julia and Lennice Najieb are the problem and the community must hold them accountable. Even in times of disagreement we must aim to never fold, but rather be honest to one another about what’s happening behind closed doors. We are in pursuit to positively enhance Fresno’s communities of color. In the near future, we hope that the Najieb’s can refocus, reconnect & re-establish healthy community relationships.

Fresno Black Wall Street, Gives honor to the iconic “Black Wall Street” of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Approaching the 1920’s racially divided communities became the mecca for black businesses. Blacks developed and supported their own entities and operations. Black-owned businesses were at an all-time high, creating one of the most prosperous African American communities in America.

9596923673?profile=originalHome for many prominent black businesses, in the greenwood community, until June 21st, 1921. One of the deadliest race riots, Led by the “Ku Klux Klan” resulted in the destruction of these businesses claiming the lives of as many as 300 African Americans, leaving more than 9,000 homeless. Destroying churches, 30 grocery stores, a hospital, a post office, schools, a bank, 21 restaurants, two movie theaters, libraries, a half dozen private airplanes and a bus system.  The remaining local blacks rebuilt greenwood without assistance from the state. By 1942 greenwood saw a resurgence of more than 200 black owned operations.

It seems like there are people who live in a fantasy world. In this fantasy world everyone is equal and there is no such thing as competition or “losers”. Everyone’s a winner and nobody has to deal with the shame of coming in last or has to put up with any hardship.

It sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? After all we don’t want someone to feel like they are better at something then another person right? Making sure that there aren’t any of those “evil” rich or “evil successful” people out there has put over a billion people under the communist flag. It’s caused parents to set up soccer matches where both teams win as long as they show up, yes the idea of pure equality and no competition has a lot of followers.

But it doesn’t work.

Sure there are reasons not to compare yourself to others. But if you do away with competition entirely you are really robbing yourself and all of mankind from growth and prosperity.

A little competition isn’t just a good thing, it’s a GREAT thing and here are 10 reasons for that statement.

1. It Promotes Growth

Where would we be without rivals? I know I would have never taken as many chances and learned as much as I have if I didn’t want to win and compete against other great people in this world.

It’s only natural; if you want to compete with someone else you have to grow. There is no way around it. That is why whenever I want to get good at something I make friends with people who are already good at it.

“Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to is.”Vince Lombardi

When I was a teenager and wanted to learn to get good at “hacky sack” I found others who were already good at it, and challenged them. In a year I went from barely being able to kick the thing twice to being able to get over 200 kicks pretty easily.

When I wanted to get good at shooting pool I made friends with one of the best pool players I could find. I’m not a world class pool player now, but I have been known to run a table without my opponent getting a shot from time to time.

In both instances looking for people who where better than me at something and competing with them helped me to grow enormously and they both lead to a great friendship as well. That is why I believe if you want to get good at something one of the things you need to do is to look for people who are better then you at it and compete with them.

2. It Advances The Human Civilization

If there was no competition we would have never landed on the moon. The main reason we even went to the moon was because of national pride. We simply had to beat the Russians and show our biggest competitors that we are number 1.

The Cold War in general (even though it is not something I want to see happen again) has created some truly remarkable technologies and has brought mankind as a whole to a new high.

Some of the things that resulted from the competition between the two giants are;

• Faster Jets
• Space Age Technology
• The GPS
• The Internet (you would not be reading this right now without competition)

As a race we owe so much of our current advancements to competition between people, between companies, and between countries. As people compete, they create and the whole world grows as a result.

3. It Forces Us To Be More Creative

The great thing about having competitors is that you have to be more innovative. You have to think outside the box and go after new options in order to get ahead. If everybody gave up their competitive spirit this world would be a very different place.

“Thank God for competition. When our competitors upset our plans or outdo our designs, they open infinite possibilities of our own work to us” Gil Atkinson

There wouldn’t be things like the iphone, computers, automobiles, or Creative writing. There just wouldn’t be the need to develop new things and go out in new directions if competition wasn’t a factor.

4. It Teaches Us

For someone to win someone else has to lose, and that sucks. But if you look at it with the right attitude this is actually a positive. We all lose at things here and then, the ones who learn from their losses actually turn their losses into a positive.

They learn from their mistakes and take it as a positive experience which they can use to grow and win next time (and there’s always a next time). By taking competition out of the picture you are not only taking away the chance for people to win, but you also take away the chance for others to learn and grow.

5. It Promotes Taking Chances And Trying Something New

I am a big fan of taking chances in life. It is something you need to do in order to grow and live a life full of great experiences. I would say that one of the biggest things which promotes chance taking is competition.

If you want to create a social media site that survives in the “facebook age” you’ll take chances and create something innovative in the world of social media like Twitter. You’ll have to create new gadget, or new ideas, just so you can survive and eclipse your rivals. Healthy competition brings out a stronger you.

6. It Makes Us More Goal Oriented

Communism is a great example of what happens when you take the competition out of society. In communism everyone makes the same amount of money regardless whether they are performing brain surgery or sweeping the floors at McDonalds.

The result? Less people want to achieve great things. Who wants to go through all that schooling and become a doctor when you can get the same amount of money by becoming a Janitor or work at a fast food restaurant?

Having competition makes us more goal oriented. We want to achieve more things and do more simply because we can grow ourselves compared to other people. Take away competition and we become lazy, and it becomes harder to motivate us. Competition is one of the forces that drives us to achieve.

7. Competition Prepares Us For The Real World

There is something going on in our school system called, “Grade Inflation.” With grade inflation the average grade that kids are getting is actually going up every year. The reason isn’t because kids are getting smarter, but because teachers are getting more lenient.

There are teachers who just give out As and Bs because it makes them look better and it makes their kids look better. The problem is that this doesn’t prepare the kids for the real world.

In this world there is a lot of competition and not everyone can be on top. You’re not the only one who is applying for a job or is trying to make something of themself. Many of your competitors have high grades just like you. So that is not the biggest factor that will influence success, it is a competitive spirit and the willingness to achieve.

The kids who had to work for their grades and actually earn them will be better prepared to succeed with their goals then the kids who got an A just because of their nice teacher.

8. It is Natural

Monkey’s do it, other animals do it, even little kids are in constant competition with each other. Competition is natural; it is how the world works. Regardless of how much we try to tell ourselves that we don’t really want to compete with someone else the fact is we do.

We want to be the best at one thing or another. We want something to call our own and it is a drive that we inherit from millions of years of evolution brought about by competition.

9. It Makes Life More Entertaining

The great thing about having rivals and challenges in life is that it makes life more entertaining. It forces us to grow and to try to achieve great things. Without competition life becomes a lot less exciting and there are a lot less challenges. For a while it is nice, but as time moves forward we need something to occupy ourselves and get some meaning in life. Competition does just that.

10. Kids Need It At Least Somewhat

As humans we want to baby our kids and make sure they are safe, which is fine. But we all need competition at least a little bit in life. If you don’t have a competitive spirit what is to separate your kids from the millions of other kids out there who will enter the workforce with a college degree?

“The first rule of competition: In order to win you have to want it more!” Desparate Housewives

Everyone needs to have some passion to live and some passion to win. It is that competitive spirit that keeps them ready to give it all they’ve got to accomplish their dreams and become number one. So, let your kids have their fun and play sports were the score matters. It will help them down the road with a drive to better themselves and put their heart and soul into whatever they are doing. It teaches them one of the basics of what it means to be human and puts them on a path for greater things in life.

Wednesday the family of Freddy Centeno filed a lawsuit against the Fresno Police department alleging that Zebulon Price and Felipe Miguel Lucero acted beyond the limits of their authority when they shot Freddy seven times on September 3, 2015.

Freddy was carrying a spray nozzle to a garden hose and the officers barely hesitated before opening fire with less than six seconds elapse from the time they exited their cruiser to the time they opened fire.

Freddy suffered from bi-polar disorder and was schizophrenic. A deadly combination when dealing with poorly trained officers who have little to no experience in dealing with the mentally ill. His family said Freddy had left for a walk and ten minutes later they heard gunshots.

Centeno had been previously evaluated by the Fresno police last March when they learned he had stopped taking his medication during a disturbance call.

Chief Dyer said in August that de-escalation, implicit bias and mental health training was underway.
Wednesday, Fresno police Deputy Chief Robert Nevarez said the responding officers did not have time to implement the training.  Unfortunately Deputy Chief Nevarez is right, these officer chose to start shooting before they had the time to asses the situation let alone implement de-escalation techniques.

Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer told The Bee that the video he reviewed showed the officers giving Centeno multiple commands. It also showed Centeno reach into his waistband and pull out the garden hose nozzle. He will hold a news conference Thursday and is considering releasing the police body cam footage, which is normally against department policy.

Why would it be against the department policy to release body camera footage?

Isn’t the objective of the body camera program to be able to provide the public with an objective record of what exactly happened in order to lay to rest any doubts there might have been surrounding the actions of any law enforcement officer involved in a use of force incident.

Even if Dyer did choose to release the full body camera footage there won’t be any evidence that will excuse the officers hasty and violent response to an unarmed Centeno.

ACLU lawyers are used to taking on injustice and speaking out on behalf of our clients. This time the discrimination happened to us.

We began the evening on a quest for a good karaoke night, and went to a bar called Brig. After waiting for more than half an hour to sing, we started to wonder when our number would be called. We planned to sing a hip hop and R&B hit from the ’90s — TLC’s Waterfalls.

But before our song was called, a bar employee came up and said we had to buy drinks to sing karaoke. Another bartender lunged at us within inches of our faces and shouted “Buy drinks!”

Our group of three had already bought two drinks. But it quickly became clear to us that we were unwelcome in the bar.

A second bartender — a very tall and large man — shouted louder and louder that we were loitering and that the bar wasn’t a hangout place. Over and over again he pushed his body up against Abre’ — who is just 5’4” tall — to force her out of the bar.

After Abre’ repeatedly resisted, saying, “Don’t touch me,” he shouted that he was calling the police and stormed off.

An off-duty server came over to try to smooth things over. We explained that we’d been removed from the karaoke list before we were even told what the rule was. We explained that several other people in the bar didn’t have drinks in their hand. She said the rule was just about business but showed no interest in enforcing it against anyone else. Instead she tried to convince us to leave. We pointed out that the bar staff was only using the rule against us and we seemed to be the only two Black people in the bar.

But the server yelled back, “It’s not fair for you to bring up race!”

Of course it’s fair to bring up race.

Let’s recap. Four white employees at a bar in Fresno called the police to kick out two Black women (who happen to be ACLU attorneys) and who appeared to be the only Black people there.

These kinds of signs have been illegal in California since the Unruh Civil Rights Act in 1959 and nationally since a 1964 U.S. Supreme Court ruling outlawed segregation.

When the police arrived, several customers explained to the officers that the bar staff were enforcing the rule against us only. Some told the police that a one drink rule did not exist. Others even tried to buy us drinks. But the bartenders wouldn’t let them.

And still, the police forced us — two Black women in the bar — to leave.

Police departments are supposed to enforce criminal laws and threats to public safety, not enforce personal biases.

The bartender and police claimed to be exercising the business’ supposed “right” to refuse service. This sounds too much like when the country still had “colored” sections and racially segregated water fountains. But this happened in March 2016.

Businesses actually do not have a legal right to refuse service to anyone or treat people differently based on race.
Since a 1964 U.S. Supreme Court decision, it has been clear that federal law prohibits businesses from discriminating on the basis of race. This case confirmed that a restaurant in the segregated Deep South could not refuse to serve Black patrons. And that ruling’s legacy means that, today, it’s against the law for a bar in Fresno to force us, two Black women, to leave over a one drink rule that the bar only applied to us.

California’s anti-discrimination laws are even stronger. The California legislature passed the Unruh Civil Rights Act in 1959 to protect people against discrimination by businesses. Under this law, businesses in California cannot refuse service or entry on the basis of race and other protected categories.

That law has been in place since 1959. And yet, in 2016, this state law was violated by the four white employees at the Fresno bar and by the police officers who allowed themselves to be tools to enforce private prejudice.

The servers said it wasn’t about race. But for us, and for many other patrons, it was. The server who said it wasn’t about race wasn’t on the receiving end of the humiliation of being kicked out of a bar.

Privilege often blurs the blatant issues of race right in front of our eyes.

We’re not the first people that this has happened to. But let’s be clear — no business can kick people out just because they’re Black.

It was all a dream............
(BIO)

Adrian “Drae Doe” Harris is one to watch. He is a man with a plan, an up and coming entrepreneurial force to be reckoned with. A dirty south native, Houston Texas is his home town, but these days he is all over California grinding with his goals as his motivation. In any given week he may be in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, or Fresno making things happen. His Navy service is what brought him to the West Coast but it is his aspirations that have kept him there.

Adrian is that rare triple threat. He's a song writer, musical artist, and business man. He has always been musically inclined and was exposed to many different styles of music early on. As a teenager he performed in several talent shows where he gained experience. Adrian was given the opportunity to manage rap artist, Piff. It was then that Adrian realized that not only could he manage and promote but that he also wanted to pursue music himself professionally so in 2007 he launched his entertainment and promotional company Mixidup. Mixidup is a high traffic internet website devoted to advertising and showcasing nightlife, music artists, and highlighting celebrity news. He created Mixidup from scratch, teaching himself how to do web design professional photography. He personally took most of the photographs used on the site in the beginning and is still a regular contributor. The following year he began writing and recording music in Hollywood California as well as performing at area clubs creating a buzz.

When asked who his biggest musical influences are he sites the late Tupac Shakur and Lil Wayne as well as the King of Pop Michael Jackson and rappers T.I and Young Jezzy. Like his influences Adrian wants to take things to the next level and establish a name for himself. His nickname “Drae Doe” comes from a combination of his given name and the generic name john doe because he feels that your name does not make you, you make the name.

In the future Adrian “Draedoe” Harris does not only desire success for himself. He strives for unity. His company logo for Mixidup symbolizes how people are polarized and separated presently, however it also embodies his belief that it is only a matter of time before we all come together. With this in mind in the future he will develop another website, Mydream.com that takes the Mixidup.com concept a step further. It will be a one stop shop for artist and entertainment venue exposure and news. Mydream.com will reach far beyond California, transcending regions. Adrian hopes to eventually make it the global go to source.

The word MIXIDUP signifies true meaning, the X which separates the two i’s stands as a barrier and a separator which causes the two i’s from coming together as one. The i's of course signify people, and the d is only in place of the +, which should represent a cross, but in this case the D stands for “Dreams.” Up stands for the Heavens Above."
